Chronic Dispensing Unit
The Western Cape Department of Health was challenged with a significant burden of chronic diseases such as asthma, diabetes, and high blood pressure, which negatively affect people’s quality of life and leads to high expenditure on medicines. Access to medicine needed to be increased to promote adherence to treatment. Pharmacy personnel were a scarce resource and another method of dispensing and providing care needed to be found. The solution was the Chronic Dispensing Unit, where an outsourced centralised service collects prescriptions from health facilities, dispenses the medicines into temper-evident patient-medicine parcels.
